Club Competition

March 20 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Theme: Silhouettes

A silhouette is an outline that appears dark (typically a single color) with little or no details/features against a brighter background. The camera’s sensor sees a silhouette when a foreground-object is placed in front of a strongly lighted background. The foreground-object looks black, and the contrast between the very bright background and the relatively dark foreground object is so large that the image sensor cannot resolve the detail of the darker object. Judge: Brian Mittlestaet

Judge’s statement:

Intention – A photo needs to have a point and point of view. A photo of a beautiful thing/person isn’t enough. Say something, photographically.

Emotion – Make me feel, something! If you weren’t that excited when you clicked the shutter, it’s unlikely that anyone else will be.

On silhouettes – I’m no expert here but if I had to summarize those silhouettes that impress me: simple shapes deserve a background that add to the story, iconic and complex shapes seem to benefit from simpler backgrounds. A bit of rim light, to give us a peek of detail, can add a spark.
